Genalogical research

What was it that first got you doing your genealogical research? In my case it started over thirty years ago. Was in my teens at the time and was very curious about where my family came from. My interest in history grew out of this and my eventually getting into speaking, researching for others and blogging on the topic. Please send me your stories.

Growing up, I had heard stories about how my paternal grandfather had learned to walk on the ship coming over from Germany and about my maternal grandfather's days in the circus and that he had been born in a sod house on the North Dakota prairie.

It was my paternal grondmother's funeral that it occurred to me how little I knew about the lives of my grandparents or even my great-grandparents. She was the last of her generation and, shortly before she died, she had been telling me about her childhood.

I didn't actually begin to do any research for a couple of years as I was busy with work and school but once I finished school, I began my research.

At first I had only intended to go back maybe three generations but the more I found out, the more I wanted to find out. I've gone well beyond three generations and the joy of breaking down a brick wall is indescribable.
